The Roman Theater

At the end of the tour is the access to the Roman Theater, his departure recover the original position of the podium and from here begins the visit to the monument.

The archaeological work carried out since 1990 until now have allowed know and understand the exceptional architecture and the meaning of the building. Their situation in one of the highest hills in the city and near the port would produce a first image of magnificence to all those who came to the city by sea.

Its location on the slopes of this hill, facilitated the construction of the cavea, which appears in its central part excavated in the rock of the mountain, while the lateral flanks are supported by vaulted galleries.

The Cavea with a capacity for 6,000 spectators, is divided into three horizontal sectors (moeniana), at the same time divided by five radial stairways in the Ima Cavea and by seven in the Media and Summa Cavea.

In front of the stands is the scenic facade, can be restored based on the analysis of imprints and the architectural elements, with a articulated plant with three parts trend curvilinear, and a elevation equivalent to 16 meters high with two orders, where the combination of red from columns, white from capitels, and gray of the podium and entablature create an evocative color set.

The restoration has gone some basic criteria directed mainly to a better understanding of the monument, so it has been necessary to replenish with new building works those remains of stands that had completely disappeared, without altering its appearance, while it has consolidated and made visible throughout the original building. Lastly, there has been a replenishment of the entrances to ensure the visit and tour inside the theater and has been partially restored the scenic facade integrating original elements.
