1988: The primary findings are uncovered during the excavation plot of the Plaza de la Condesa de Peralta amidst plans to construct the Centro Regional de Artesanía. This initial campaign uncovers a strata of rich historical and architectural remains in various levels foreseeing the importance of these constructions.

1990: The partial remains are identified as those belonging to the Roman Theatre of the old Cartago Nova.

1991-1992: Very detailed research is carried out including archaeological and geotechnical drillings.

1993-1995: Three excavation campaigns are carried out in connection with the agreement devised by the Cartagena Town Hall, the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and the Ministry of Culture.

1996: The cooperation agreement is signed by the Cartagena Town Hall, the Autonomous Comunity of the Region of Murcia and the Fundación Cajamurcia. The excavation programme is designed

1996-2003: Through a programmed rhythm of archaeological research and cataloguing of work, virtually the entire excavation of the Theatre is completed so that it may be seen in all its splendour.
